Columbia School of the Arts' Digital Storytelling Lab

The Digital Storytelling Lab (DSL) is a next-generation media lab that believes storytelling can change the world. I believe that, too. As an artist/Storyteller/human guided by the question "What else can stories be and do?" and working in the space between art, storytelling and emergent technologies, it was a joy to connect with this group—whose mission is to explore new forms and functions of storytelling in this same space—in 2020.

Since then, I have been participant and facilitator for countless prototyping sessions, meet-ups and collaborative workshops with the lab. In early 2021, I produced a virtual, public run of Lance Weiler's Where There's Smoke, an interactive documentary in which participants navigate a landscape of grief, fire and family secrets.

I am also a key collaborator on the lab's current prototype, Blockchain Fairytales (BFT), which has been featured in festivals around the world including thewrong, the Festival of Arts and Ideas, Unfinished Live at The Shed, Slamdance, Sitges Film Festival and more.

A collaborative myth-making exercise in which participants model and engage with the narrative potentials and social impact of generative AI and decentralized technology, and explore if there is a way to do the “slow work” necessary for both ecological crisis and ethical tech development.

Curated by Lance Weiler and Columbia DSL. Featuring Nicholas Fortugno, Shar Simpson, Tanya Vlach, Takaaki Okada, Olivia Powell, Patrick Bender, Stephen Smith, Uli Ap, Aaron Santiago, Lance Weiler, Reinier Clabbers.
